New Delhi: Intel on Monday joined major technology and transportation providers, automakers, universities and government to collaborate and provide solutions to address road safety challenges.

The collaboration, which is part of the Safety Pioneers Conference which was inaugurated here by Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari, aims to serve as a platform to showcase initiatives and technologies road safety pioneers such as the Internet of Things (IoT), ADAS and other emerging technologies that can have a large-scale impact.

With a focus on using technology for road safety, the company also showcased Intel Onboard Fleet Services (“Solution”), an AI-powered fleet safety solution for commercial vehicles during the conference.

As a first-of-its-kind initiative, this comprehensive solution brings world-class, road-tested technology exclusively designed for Indian conditions.

It offers collision avoidance systems (CAS), driver monitoring systems, fleet telematics, fleet health and fuel efficiency features.

“Road safety has always been a pressing issue in our country, with the highest traffic accident rate in the world. Intel and its ecosystem partners from government, industry and academia have worked tirelessly to leverage the power of technology to help achieve India’s road safety goals. And this conference further strengthens the commitment by bringing together key players to collaborate, innovate and advance road safety in India,” said Nivruti Rai, Country Head, Intel India, and Vice President, Intel Foundry Services, in a statement.

Intel’s solutions also include advanced telematics, covering vehicle health and fuel analysis, and a unique driver rating and evaluation module. This can significantly help fleets reduce the risk of accidents and downtime, while encouraging good driving practices through targeted incentive and reward programs.

At the heart of the solution is Driver Coaching, which activates 15 different inputs to provide individualized coaching recommendations to commercial fleets, who lose up to 25 working days per accident involved.

The solution, already deployed by 16 customers, indicates that this technology can reduce the probability of accidents by 40-60% and estimates that overall efficiency losses can be reduced by up to 50%.

India has one of the highest traffic accident rates in the world – responsible for nearly 11% of all road deaths globally with just 1% of vehicles globally. There are 17 deaths every hour and one accident every minute on Indian roads.

Six out of 10 accidents involving commercial fleets can be avoided with prompt driver intervention. Additionally, the commercial fleet industry suffers efficiency losses of up to Rs 48,000 crore annually due to fleet accidents and breakdowns.

Competition in home broadband space is expected to intensify further in the second half of the year as demand for more bandwidth continues and around 60% of the market remains untapped.

Internet Service Providers (ISPs) in the Philippines have captured around 40% of the domestic broadband market.

“The 60% (market) is a lot of customers, if you look at 25 million households. They (the ISPs) see between 2 and 4 million subscribers each,” said Edgardo Cabarios, deputy commissioner of the Commission. National Telecommunications Authority (NTC), during a telephone interview.

With this, ISPs aggressively expanded their networks and offered competitive pricing to retain existing subscribers and attract new customers.

Bandwidth demand is increasing every day, the NTC said.

“(Not) just the new market…the existing market wants faster speed, higher capacity, they want more bandwidth,” Cabarios said.

Competition will intensify further with the planned commercial launch of satellite broadband services from billionaire Elon Musk Space Exploration Technologies Corp. (SpaceX) in the country through its Starlink Internet Services Philippines Inc. unit in the fourth quarter of the year.

This will bring additional capacity and provide efficient internet service in mission areas, Cabarios said.

“The entry of Starlink will simply provide the additional capacity… satellite (internet service) is very effective in mission areas. It will provide a cost-effective solution to these areas,” he added.

He pointed out that Starlink should partner with at least two fiber optic broadband providers to ensure the reliability of its internet service in the country.

Starlink can get the best price with the best quality as there are several potential fiber telecom providers in the country such as Sky Broadband, Globe Telecom, PLDT, Converge ICT Solutions, Infinivan, Red fiber among others.

The Philippines is expected to be the first country in Southeast Asia to take advantage of Starlink service which provides a system of low Earth orbit satellites designed to provide broadband internet connectivity with speeds between 100 and 200 megabits per second, especially in geographically isolated and disadvantaged areas where laying fiber optic cables is difficult.

Starlink prides itself on offering faster internet speeds than fiber optic cables, as its satellite internet service provides a constellation of multiple satellites that orbit the Earth approximately 550 kilometers away, which also provides global coverage to its users.

The NTC last month approved Starlink’s registration as a value-added service (VAS) provider, paving the way for the company to begin offering internet access services in the Philippines.

Starlink’s VAS registration allows it to directly access satellite systems and build and operate broadband facilities to provide Internet services. NTC’s prompt processing of its registration was intended to expedite the immediate rollout of the service.

Utilities Face Challenges in Securing Legacy ICS

Most industrial control systems were not designed for public connections. They were created to perform specific internal functions related to the provision or management of public services.

However, the ingrained nature of these systems makes it difficult for companies to remove and replace them. the time and costs involved are often prohibitive and can result in days or weeks of service disruptions. As a result, many agencies have chosen to give ICS limited access to other systems on the network to better manage services.

But this connection creates a challenge: if attackers can compromise edge systems and move laterally through networks, they may be able to access industrial control systems and take control of basic utility functions.

It is not an unnecessary concern. Consider the recent attack on a water treatment plant in Oldsmar, Florida. After compromising the agency’s ICS, a hacker increased the level of sodium hydroxide in the local water supply to 100 times its normal concentration. Also known as lye, sodium hydroxide is used to manage water acidity and remove metals from drinking water. In high concentrations, however, this chemical can cause pain, vomiting, bleeding, and burning.

Fortunately, the attack did not last long. An operator noticed that the cursor on his screen moved around without his intervention, and once he regained control, the attacker left, allowing the operator to return laundry levels to normal, s’ making sure no one was hurt.

What are the government’s concerns about securing the IIoT?

The fact that an attacker was able to access this type of function is concerning. This indicates a heightened awareness among malicious actors that industrial control systems are not only connected to wider networks, but can be accessed and compromised to put citizens at risk.

The threat grew: on April 13, the US Department of Energythe Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency and the FBI issued a joint statement warning that “some advanced persistent threat actors have demonstrated the ability to gain full system access to multiple industrial control systems/supervisory control and data acquisition devices.”

Attackers also exploit vulnerabilities such as CVE-2020-15368allowing them to compromise Windows desktops commonly used in operational technology environments and move laterally through organizations to breach ICS tools.

What measures can utilities take other than air spacing?

Although air spacing can limit the risk of unauthorized access to critical ICS data, it is only one element of a successful security program.

“Federal agencies and state and local governments are increasingly working with critical infrastructure providers to strengthen defenses and reduce the vulnerability of integrated information and operational technology networks,” Richberg said.

Other ways to enhance ICS security include:

  • Segmentation networks: Logically segmenting networks rather than physically separating them can provide increased visibility without significantly increasing risk.
  • Securing endpoints: Better security of on-premises and cloud-connected endpoints through robust network mapping solutions can help agencies identify potential attacks before they gain access to ICS infrastructures.
  • Zero trust architectures: By requiring proof of identity rather than assuming it, utilities can limit the number of users on their networks, reducing the risk of ICS compromise.
  • Multi-factor authentication: Both two-factor authentication and MFA offer an additional layer of challenge to ensure that users are who they say they are and that attackers are locked out of ICS networks, even if they compromise a access road.

Additionally, Richberg points to the increasing use of technologies such as data diodes or unidirectional gateways that allow the flow of information in only one direction. This in turn allows ICS components to report performance issues but not receive incoming malicious commands.

ICS risks are growing as attackers seek to compel utility agencies to act immediately. Air gaps are a solid starting point to reduce the risk of ICS compromise, but provide enhanced protection when combined with additional elements such as network segmentation, endpoint security, zero architecture trust and MFA authentication.

The wireless interconnection of everyday objects known as the Internet of Things depends on networks of wireless sensors that need a low but constant supply of electrical power. This can be provided by electromagnetic energy collectors that generate electricity directly from the environment. Lise-Marie Lacroix of the University of Toulouse, France, with colleagues from Toulouse, Grenoble and Atlanta, Georgia, USA, used a mathematical technique, finite element simulation, to optimize the design of such a recuperator energy so that it generates electricity as efficiently as possible. This work has just been published in the journal EPJ special topics.

The Internet of Things consists of an enormous number of portable, usually small devices, each of which needs its own source of sustainable micro-energy. Batteries are unsatisfactory for this as they will often need to be replaced or recharged. Many different technologies are being considered instead, with one of the most promising solutions being electromagnetic energy harvesting.

An electromagnetic energy harvester consists of a vibrating plate holding an array of facing micro-magnets coupled to a parallel static coil. Electrical energy is generated by vibrating magnets and the amount of electricity that can enter a circuit depends on the design of the coil and the magnet and the spacing between them.

Lacroix and his team studied a system in which the magnets were state-of-the-art NdFeB, that is, they were composed of an alloy of neodymium, a rare earth metal, with iron. and boron. They discovered that power could be optimized through a trade-off between the spacing of the magnets in the array and the number of turns in the coil; reducing the distance between the coil and the array and increasing the thickness of the magnets can also increase it. “We are now producing harvesters using the guidelines we developed through this study,” she explains. These devices are likely to prove useful in the aerospace, automotive, and biomedical industries and others that have come to rely on the Internet of Things.

As part of the joint effort, this collaboration combines two major 5G frequency bands, Sub-6 and 5G mmWave, to enhance the capabilities of Thailand 5G network and expand the 5G application landscape.

Also in May 2021, AIS, ZTE and Suranaree University of Technology collaborated to test the 5G Smart Factory. This helps staff gain expertise in AI, Cloud, IoT, VR, and AR.
