Digitization is a pervasive strategy essential to supporting business and growth in a post-pandemic economy. The high penetration and improvement of digital solutions and accompanying hardware has made digitization affordable and customizable.

The market for digital solutions for commercial aerospace is captured by identifying digital R&D investments and annual digital spend for each stakeholder. Digital investing is widely seen as part of investing in information technology (IT), with the exception of a few major industry players who have dedicated digital investments and teams to the implementation. implementation and monitoring progress.

Digitization covers a company’s investments and efforts to move towards digital processes, reduce overhead costs and identify new sources of revenue. Investments in mobile solutions, cloud computing, Internet of Things and artificial intelligence are some of the key areas of focus for digitization.

The study is segmented into 4 key segments of commercial aviation: airlines; airports; maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO); and original equipment manufacturer (OEM).

Growth factors have been identified for each type of airline. The parameters for full-service carriers were economic strength (in terms of percentage growth of GDP) and levels of passenger and tourism traffic; for low cost carriers, domestic passenger traffic levels and smartphone / internet penetration; and for freight carriers, the level of international freight movement.

As the COVID-19 pandemic has severely affected the spending capacity of airports in 2020, digital investments will be allocated only to high priority projects; this will impact the overall IT budget needs of the airport amid the drastic drop in overall passenger traffic. Therefore, airports will take a cautious approach in the short term (2021-2023) until passenger traffic reaches the level before the 2019 pandemic (likely during 2024-2025).

The digital investment budget largely depends on the overall passenger traffic in airports and on the financial capacity for digital investment of airports. Airports with high passenger traffic (e.g. APAC airports) and high spending capacity (e.g. Tier I airports) will be able to offset the decline in revenues realized during the period 2020-2023.

MRO participants, with their B2B business model, are far behind in terms of digitization (only 6%), compared to other aviation players. Social distancing standards and the resulting limited number of onsite technicians have held back the growth of the overall market, but these factors have contributed to an increase in digitization projects in MROs.

The OEM segment not only offers digital solutions to other segments, but also actively invests in the acquisition and development of full digital capabilities (e.g. Boeing’s AnalytX platform). Most digital initiatives have been managed by internal teams, with only specific projects being outsourced.

OEMs are leveraging digital solutions to improve throughput, quality, and workforce efficiency – the key drivers for the forecast period. The supply chain vulnerabilities resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic, the challenges of data sharing and the cross-border integration requirements are the main challenges that were considered when forecasting the OEM segment.

In the short term (2021-2023), the market will experience high growth as aviation recovers (to pre-pandemic levels) by meeting pent-up demand, increasing demand to keep aircraft parked and to the main equipment manufacturers managing their growing arrears and orders; these factors will increase digital investments in efficient operations in the airline and airport segments.

Digital investment in the airline segment will be directed to revamped revenue and demand management solutions; in the airport segment, towards self-service technology and passenger flow management; and in the MRO segment, towards mobile solutions.
