Lafarge Canada and Mattamy Homes Partner to Build Greener Homes in Calgary | Business

CALGARY, Alberta – (BUSINESS WIRE) – October 1, 2021–

Canada’s largest supplier of sustainable building materials has partnered with Canada’s largest homebuilder – and these changes are significant, too.

“We are all aware of the challenges we face,” says Bob Spence, Lafarge vice president and general manager for the Southern Alberta region. “The built environment plays a central role in reducing CO2 emissions, and working with our home construction partners is an ideal solution. “

Lafarge supplies ECOPact to Mattamy Homes operations in Calgary, pouring low carbon concrete for more than 450 homes per year in the region. “When Lafarge came up with the idea of replacing our existing concrete supply with its more environmentally friendly ECOPact product, it made perfect sense,” said Ryan Duke, vice president of purchasing for the Alberta division of Mattamy Homes. “We are committed to reducing our carbon footprint. That this product has the same durability, strength and finish as standard concrete, but instead recycles materials to reduce what ends up in the landfill is a huge victory.

Lafarge’s ECOPact, with 30 to 100% less carbon emissions compared to standard concrete, is an ideal solution. “The performance doesn’t change,” says Spence. “By choosing ECOPact over conventional concrete, Mattamy is integrating sustainability into its project from the start. “

Working with Lafarge in Calgary since 2010, the Mattamy team in Calgary have found the transition to ECOPact easy and straightforward. “An opportunity to reduce our impact while continuing to deliver the quality and performance our owners expect is what makes this a great solution,” says Duke.

ECOPact is the first “green” concrete in Canada, setting itself apart from standard concrete thanks to mixtures of cements and upcycled construction and demolition waste. Emissions reductions are calculated and quantified through environmental product claims, which are then approved by Climate Earth, a third-party tester that reviews and validates the information provided by Lafarge.

“EPD is essential for establishing GHG reduction baselines,” explains Spence. “Knowing that the innovations we have implemented can be proven allows our customers to believe that they are having a real impact.

Mattamy has a big impact across Canada and in Calgary. They’ve been building homes in Calgary since 2006, closing 477 homes in the area in fiscal year 2021 alone. By starting to use ECOPact, they reduced nearly 700 tonnes of CO2 compared to conventional Lafarge concrete. Duke says, “We took this opportunity to build sustainability into our homes from scratch. It’s the right thing to do and we’re proud to be part of the solution here in Calgary.
